John came to Inner Voice in January of this year after more than five years without a home, sometimes living on the street and sometimes staying with friends.  Back in 2015, he had big dreams of working in law enforcement and had obtained two degrees, but he struggled with a leg injury that caused him a lot of pain and sidelined his path to the job he so wanted to pursue.  The pain led him to addiction in his effort to relieve the pain. He had a friend whose Mother let him stay with this for a while, but his addiction reared its head again, and he had to leave.  He lived on the streets for a while, in and out of shelters and at some point, had a fall and as unfortunate as that was, it must have fixed something in his nerve as he started to get sensitivity back in his leg.  He had hit rock bottom and getting feeling back in in his leg felt like ” A new chance”.  He just needed a place to stay and get better. After trying many different shelters, he was finally referred to Inner Voice earlier this year.  That chance gave him the opportunity to get stronger and more focused and we are thrilled to announce that he did the hard work…He now has an ID, a social security card, a copy of his birth certificate, a checking and savings account and two jobs!  After a short time at one job, they could see his potential and offered him a chance to advance.  Inner Voice was happy to hand over a key to his new apartment and a real sense of independence.  He can’t wait to see what the future holds, and to make sure he thanks his friend and her Mother for the support they gave him for so many years as he struggled.  John states “If you want to get your act together, this is the place to do it and while I can’t forget the past, I don’t have to live there”.  We couldn’t agree more John. Your hard work and dedication have paid off and we all wish you nothing but continued success as you transition into the next phase of your journey.
