Something’s blooming at the Robert Johnson House—and it’s more than just vegetables.
Mr. Fable, one of our residents, has lived in countries around the world—Austria, Italy, Yugoslavia, and Argentina, before settling in Illinois. Life was stable for a while, but after a difficult divorce, two serious bouts of COVID, and a hospitalization, everything changed. He lost his income, his housing, and his savings.
In 2024, he came to the Robert Johnson House determined to start over. While working toward job certifications, he noticed the overgrown garden behind the house, once a beautiful Veteran Garden when the home was the Eddie Beard Veteran House. He asked if he could bring it back to life.
Today, the garden is growing and so is the sense of connection. Residents gather outside, ask about the vegetables, swap stories, and find a peaceful place to just be. Mr. Fable shares stories of cooking with Italian nonnas, preparing paella in Argentina, and planting with care.
“I love the garden and watching it grow,” Mr. Fable says, “but seeing the effect it has on everyone else is the true gift.”
